How To File an Amended Return

Mistakes happen even with taxes. Whether you realized you missed a lucrative deduction forgot to report a side hustle or received a corrected tax document after you already filed the good news is that tax authorities provide a way to fix it.

Filing an amended return allows you to correct errors on an already submitted tax return ensuring you remain compliant and dont pay more than you should. Here is your step by step guide to getting it right.

Why Should You File an Amended Return You dont need to amend your return for simple math errors or if you forgot to attach a form. However you should file an amendment if you have income discrepancies missed deductions or reliefs or if your filing status changed.

Step by Step Guide to Filing on iTax

  1. Log In to iTax Go to the KRA iTax Portal and log in using your KRA PIN and password.

  2. Navigate to Amend Return Once logged in go to the Returns tab on the top menu. From the dropdown menu select File Amended Return.

  3. Select Tax Obligation and Period Choose your tax obligation such as Income Tax Resident Individual or VAT. Select the Return Period that contains the error. The system will display your previously filed return for that period.

  4. Download and Edit the Excel Form The system will prompt you to download the return form. Open the Excel file and enable Macros. The form will be pre filled with the data from your original return. Only modify the fields that were incorrect. Do not change data that was already accurate.

  5. Validate and Upload Once you have made the corrections click the Validate button at the bottom of the Excel sheet. If there are no errors the system will generate a zipped file. Go back to the iTax page and upload this zipped file. Submit the return and download your Acknowledgment Receipt.

Important Things to Know Most tax periods only allow one amendment online. Ensure everything is correct before hitting submit. If the amendment shows you overpaid you must apply for a refund separately. If you owe more tax after amending pay the difference immediately to avoid mounting interest and penalties. For Income Tax you generally have up to five years to claim a refund.

What Happens Next If your amendment results in an increased tax liability the system usually validates it automatically. However if your amendment results in a decreased tax liability meaning the government owes you money it will be subjected to an approval process by a tax officer before the changes reflect in your ledger.
